World Clothing

For several years, the MCTQ has been broadening the scope of its collection by adding garments from far-flung cultures and countries.

The Zhang Collection, generously donated by Ms. Zhimei Zhang in 2006, was a major acquisition for the museum: it is one of Canada’s largest collections of Chinese textile art. It comprises over 800 items, including embroidered clothing and accessories (hats, shoes, dudous, pouches and cases) dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Displayed publicly for the first time in 2007, the Zhang Collection exhibition was accompanied by a monograph titled Beyond the Ordinary - Chinese Garments and Accessories of the 19th and 20th Centuries.

The collection has since been augmented with additional Chinese pieces donated by Beatrice Pearson and by the estate of Yvette Raiche. About one hundred garments from various parts of the world round out the international collection.

The acquisition of the Zhang Collection was a major step in the MCTQ’s growth and future direction. Because of its richness and size, it enhances the museum’s credibility among its international peers, opens the door to exchanges with other museums and institutions, and facilitates dialogue with potential donors.
