Curieux nichoirs!

Summer 2010 - Since July is our national moving month, the Museum has put up dozens of pretty birdhouses for our flying friends in its garden, as well as in the Saint-Lambert Municipal Library.

Over 100 amateur artists from ages 12 to 35 clerverly used ribbons, feathers, fabrics, buttons and strings to reinvent these nesting houses for the project Dehors la relève ! which was made possible by financial assistance from Loisir et Sport Montérégie.

Une exposition en partage*

Une exposition en partage was a group show designed and produced by young people. Originally from 46 different countries, the 153 students from Antoine-Brossard High School designed and made a stunningly creative wardrobe inspired by the famous Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Emperor’s New Clothes. The collaboration produced 54 display garments, a wardrobe truly worthy of royalty.

These garments, in turn, inspired 60 students in adult literacy and education courses (French as a second language), who wrote accompanying text for each of the designs. The texts were then printed on cards.

Participating organizations: Groupe d’entraide IOTA, Le Fablier, La Boîte à lettres, Centre Lemoyne-d’Iberville and Centre d’éducation des adultes en français langue seconde Antoine-Brossard.

*Une exposition en partage was made possible by financial assistance from Forum jeunesse Longueuil and won the 2008 Essor award for culture and education (province-wide) and the regional Essor award in the partnership category.

Tisser des liens

On August 21 and 22, 2008, during the Saint-Lambert festival, a small group of teenagers met at the museum to make an urban artwork. First, the young artists painted two huge canvases that they cut into strips. They then reassembled the strips as a tapestry, creating a new painting… The result: two unique artworks and one unforgettable experience!

The Tisser des liens project received support from Oxy-jeunes, a non-profit organization whose mission is to address the needs of 12-to-17 year-olds and to help them achieve their ambitions by providing space for creative work. In recognition of the social importance of the arts and cultural activities, Oxy-jeunes’ goal is to support school-based programs and leisure activities.

Le MCTQ sous toutes ses coutures

The MCTQ, all wrapped up!

Here at the MCTQ, we have no reason to envy Paris’ Pont Neuf or Berlin’s Reichstag, both of which have had the honour of being wrapped in fabric by the world-famous conceptual artist, Christo.

In fact, from August 17 to 20, 2006, the Museum was wrapped in an enormous quilt made of recycled materials and clothing, the product of a community-based artistic endeavour.

Our first outdoor installation took place in May, paving the way for a second showing, this time on a larger, bolder scale, and involving the participation of several schools and organizations.

Les arbres s’habillent

In 2007, Saint-Lambert celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding. To highlight the event, the MCTQ sponsored creative activities for children attending day camps in the area. The Les arbres s’habillent project sought to beautify and add colour to a stretch of rue Riverside, as a unique commemoration of the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

Within just a few hours, the urban landscape was transformed by young tree-tailoring teams, who wrapped tree trunks in multicoloured straps and fabrics, making each one a unique piece of art.

For a few weeks, rue Riverside looked like an enchanted forest.

Les Jardins en herbes

From September 22 to December 10, 2006, the MCTQ hosted Jardins réduits, a thematic exhibition for the 8th International Triennial of Miniature Textiles, originally assembled by the Musée Jean Lurçat et de la tapisserie contemporaine, in Angers, France.

Seventy artists were asked to create works on the theme of miniature gardens made from thread or based on the idea of thread, no larger than 12 x 12 x 12 cm.

The MCTQ invited students studying plastic arts at the École internationale Saint-Edmond in Greenfield Park (grades 10 and 11) to create their own garden-themed miniature textiles.

Between January 10 and February 27, 2007, more than 40 of these miniatures were on display at the Saint-Lambert public library.
