WOVEN LYRICS

The intricate garments on display are an invitation to discover one of the many fascinating aspects of Mayan culture. Lively colours and rich textures give everyday Mayan traje (attire) a poetic identity, a vibrant witness to the survival and transformation of an ancient textile tradition.

Discover the lyricism of the huipil, the secret language of the cinta and the simplicity of the backstrap handloom. Rounding out the exhibit, Kathryn V. Lipke and John McKay’s enchanting films, Daughters of Ixchel: Maya Thread of Change and Between Light and Shadow: Maya Women in Transition, highlight the exacting work of Mayan weavers, offering a reflection on a unique contribution to world textile heritage.

Display contents: Approximately fifty garments and accessories displayed on mannequins, T-frames and in wall-mounted showcases; seven illustrations of traditional clothing (9.5 x 12 inches); six laminated, bilingual explanatory texts.

Complementary items: Colour catalogue, workshops, teaching guides, two films (VHS or CD; English only)
